There is a lot of hate in the world. You don’t need me to
tell you that. Look anywhere and you will see it. It’s always been that way,
but I think it is getting marginally better.

The Bachelorette Australia Recap S2 E3
Osher
arrives and does his peace-sign-hello again. Osher, you are not a tourist or in the 70s. Spoiling the suspense, Osher reveals it’s
a single date card, and skips away (did that really just happen? Or did I
imagine it? I think he skipped away…).
My girlfriend is recapping The Bachelorette. She’s amazing and everyone should read it.
Money and Jobs
So why can’t I just get money? Why won’t people just give me
a job, or better still, a big fat advance on a script?
The world isn’t that simple is the answer. Nobody is owed
anything and you need to work hard to have a decent life.
Inevitably
I recently read The Killing Season Uncut, Sarah Ferguson’s behind the scenes book about the TV
show of the same name. It was a brilliant program that detailed the tumultuous
2007-2013 Labor government and all the associated leadership drama down here in
Australia. I was a bit disappointed in the book actually because I thought it
just went through the same timeline and facts and interviews of the show, and
didn’t really have that much behind the scenes information to warrant a whole
book.
I Guess I’m Becoming a Trekker Then
When it comes to movies and TV, I’m nothing if not a
completionist. As I’ve mentioned before on here, I don’t consider myself a fan
of something until I’ve seen a good chunk of it. I just don’t want to be
considered to be jumping on the bandwagon if it’s a popular show and I’ve only
seen a couple episodes. Give me at least a couple seasons or a movie or two, if
it’s a franchise, before I can really feel like a well-informed fan. Because
what’s the point in being a fan if you’re not well informed?
Origin
There’s always those brief three seconds after Queensland
loses where I consider if life is truly worth living. I snap out of it pretty
quickly, and it must be said that in this regard the last ten years have been
pretty sweet. I was pretty cantankerous for a while in 2014 but I’ve generally
been pretty happy over the years. Don’t even get me started on the grand final
last year though – I still can’t watch the replays.
Six Seasons and My Favourite Thing
There was a time in my life where Community was my favourite thing in the world. I was halfway through my last year of high school and dealing with all the stress and drama involved with that and my brother introduced me to this new show, Community. I was hooked right away – I still consider the pilot one of the best twenty minutes of TV I’ve ever seen.

A Facebook friend once cursed the misguided decision by Allan
Cunningham to discover the Darling Downs – not because it’s a bad place but
because it just gets so damn cold in winter.
Voting
There was a deaf couple ahead of me in the line to vote a few
weeks ago. When asked which electorate they were from, the man held up a piece
of paper with his name and other details. Naively, but not surprisingly, I’ve
never given any thought to how a deaf person would deal with this scenario, and
really, any other day-to-day interaction. Of course I know people deal with
disability every day but I’ve never really thought deeply about it. I’ve never
had to.
Update on my life
Best movie I’ve seen in the last few months: Cop Land.
Terrific urban western. Outstanding story and direction and what a performance by
Sly.
Best TV show I’ve been watching: Working my way through Daria
with my girlfriend. I always liked it when I was little but I never really ‘got’
it. Now I’m in love with it. Has to be the best show about high school ever
made. And what an antidote to every other teenage story.
Things that are annoying me: Just generally bummed out by
world events in 2016. Celebrity deaths, terror attacks, Tory bullshit
everywhere. Not a lot to recommend about this year.
Things that aren’t annoying me: Well Queensland have won State of Origin so
that’s always worth celebrating. And I was at the game, very lucky.
My girlfriend and I have found a nice safe place to live. Hasn’t
always been that way recently.
Things that are worrying me: My uni course didn’t work out
for first semester so that’s kind of derailed my entire career plan. Changed courses
and looking for a job before Centrelink cuts off in November. If I can’t find
anything by then, everything’s fucked.
Rick And Morty
What a terrific show. Really, it is so good, so consistently
entertaining and wilfully unique it is a miracle it is allowed to exist at all.
TV shows shouldn’t have main characters attempting suicide or accidentally
shooting family friends. They’re not supposed to have downbeat endings where
nobody learns anything. There shouldn’t be characters called Bird Person or Mr
Poopybutthole. There shouldn’t even be Rick, a truly singular anti-hero, a guy
who just muscles his way through life without a plan or moral concern for
anyone else. TV is not supposed to be so nihilist, so pessimistic. And it
shouldn’t work so well. It is amazing.
A Galaxy Close To Home
Full disclosure: I wrote this a few months ago but it was in
my notebook and I forgot about it. So here it is, all typed up.
I’ve refrained from writing about Star Wars even though I’ve
had a lot of thoughts about the new film (and about the others). Every second
person has written a reflective essay about how much Star Wars means to them
and mine wouldn’t be any different – but here it is anyway. It really is one of
those films that, if it hits you at the right moment in your life, has an
everlasting impact.
