The time the hospital thought I had an eating disorder

Couple years ago I was in hospital because I had been peeing too much. Not uncontrollably or constantly, but frequently enough that my girlfriend eventually convinced me to see a doctor. Whether she was truly concerned about my health or just annoyed that I woke her up while going to the bathroom every night remains unclear.

Structure

There’s not much that would make me return to high school or undergraduate studies, but their inherent structure is certainly appealing. You have a certain number of days per week where you’re out of the house, you have assessment and other commitments that take up other large portions of your time and the free time you do have is clearly earned and can be enjoyed guilt free. Social interaction is also built in – you’re forced to have friends or at least be around other people.

BuzzFeed Unsolved

A few months ago Senaai and I had nothing to watch. We didn’t want to watch a movie, we didn’t have a TV show on the go. We just wanted something short, something funny to watch before we went to sleep.

After looking around YouTube for a bit, we were lost. Everything was shit. On a whim, one of us suggested we see if BuzzFeed Australia had any videos. They did, and they were fine, yet our viewing itch remained unscratched.

Then, in the “BuzzFeed” search results, one video stood out to me: “The Strange Disappearance of D.B. Cooper”

Marriage Equality

We’re about to vote in the marriage equality survey and it feels utterly wrong. Human rights, particularly the rights of minority groups, shouldn’t be a popularity contest. Our country already has a system to decide changes to the law, and the fact that this government cannot do so, even with widespread support both in parliament and in the community, is an absolute joke.

JT

I’ve been thinking a lot about Johnathan Thurston’s match winning sideline conversion from the second State of Origin match. It was a beautiful kick and wonderful theatre. If it were in a movie, it would be unbelievable.

It came in the final moments of the game with the series on the line. He had one arm busted, hanging limply at his side. JT was rushed back to the team after missing game one, where Queensland were smashed, their worst defeat in a decade or more. Even in the game, they had to fight back from 16-6 at halftime. Then came his final act in State of Origin after dominating for twelve years. The Football Gods sure know how to write a story.

Ownership

Senaai and I bought three CDs the other day. We actually looked around the store, picked and bought physical CDs and took them home with us. We still buy DVDs and Blu Rays quite regularly too. There was a stage a few years ago where we raided Cash Converters for old DVDs in a 10 for $10 deal. I can’t miss a good deal. And we still go to the cinema at least once a week, if we can arrange the time.

Gone With The Classics

Does anything compare to knocking an important film off your to watch list? I’m no way to finishing mine and probably never will. But it’s always a thrill to watch a classic.

This week it was Gone With The Wind. It’s always been one of those films I know I should see but never really got around to watching. There was actually a very specific sequence of events that had to occur for us to watch it this time.

Between jobs

Nobody tells you about the mental strain of unemployment. To be
fair, it’s not something you’d really be able to understand until you’re in it.

It’s hard to keep applying for jobs when I’ve already been
knocked back for dozens already. The two university degrees I have look pretty
pointless. I sometimes can’t think of anything else apart from my lack of work.
I check my emails every ten minutes, hoping I might have some good news. No luck.
The one good opportunity I had suddenly stopped dead after two rounds of
interviews. No word back.

Fortunate Events

I love reading. I wouldn’t have done nearly as well at school
and uni if I hadn’t read so much. I had friends and whatever, but books are so
much better. There’s something about the actual process of reading that expands
your mind so much more than just watching a film or playing a video game (although
I love and see all the benefits of those activities too).

The Heat

I know I’m Australian but I fucking hate hot weather. It’s
probably because I’m Australian and live in the heat for so much of the year
that I can’t stand it. If I lived in Siberia or England or somewhere, I’m sure
I’d love a little bit of sun. The grass is always greener, the weather is
always better somewhere else.

Podcasting

Everyone has a podcast these days. They’re fun, free to
listen to, easy to make, and can be about anything. It’s democratic for sure,
but surely we’ve hit peak podcast by now? I mean I wouldn’t be surprised if my
three-week-old nephew is reviewing toys and cartoons on SoundCloud somewhere.
